What are the symptoms of TMJ?

If you routinely experience one or more of the following symptoms, you may have TMJ. Common symptoms include:

  • Jaw, Ear, or Face Pain
  • Jaw Clicking, Cracking, or Popping
  • Frequent Headaches
  • Difficulty or Inability to Open Mouth
  • Dental Trauma or Gum Recession

Does TMJ go away on its own?

It depends on what the underlying cause is. TMJ can be caused by malocclusion, overbites, and underbites, in which case it is less likely to go away until the patient receives orthodontic treatment. In cases where patients are going through a time of heightened stress or anxiety, their TMJ symptoms may disappear when things calm down again. Whether you clench and grind your teeth nightly or just on occasion, we recommend seeking treatment, as even mild TMJ can cause irreversible damage to the teeth and jaw.

How is TMJ treated?

Our office treats TMJ by creating durable, custom nightguards that are designed to protect the teeth and jaw. The custom fit helps the nightguard feel comfortable to wear for many hours at a time, while the thick material protects the patient’s smile from the force of their bite. If you would like to have a custom nightguard created, our team can take impressions of your teeth to send to the lab. Once the nightguard has been designed and created, we will schedule a quick appointment for you to come in and try it on to ensure it fits perfectly.
